The museum is a remarkable compendium of 5 centuries of art of the azulejos, exhibited along a didactic and chorological itinerary which winds over two floors inside the convent Madre de Deus. Hispanic-Moorish models of the XV- XVI century, tiles from Antwerp (XVI cent.), baroque and contemporary motifs are all stored here.
A huge panel represents the city before the earthquake of 1755. Every wall of the museum is covered with azulejos, and the courtyards evocate Arab atmospheres. You should not miss a quick look at the café on the ground floor, once the kitchen of the convent, where the motifs on the tiles represent foods and kitchen tools.
