The Monastery dos Jeronimos has been declared a World human Heritage by Unesco for its stunning beauty. It was ordered by king Manuel I as a political symbol of the Portuguese expansion. In fact it was raised up in proximity of the beach where Vasco da Gama successfully returned from the glorious deeds overseas.
The construction began in 1502 and continued for more than a century, combining various architectural elements. The cloister in particular is considered one of the most beautiful in Portugal. Inside the complex are the tombs of Manuel I and his family, as well as those of Vasco de Gama, Luis de Camões and Fernando Pessoa.
